License Renewal 101: What PA Motorists Need to Know

Two questions you might have as a driver are: how do I renew my license and what documentation do I need?  In Pennsylvania, drivers are required to renew their license every four years on or before the expiration date, which is usually the day after the driver’s birthday. The good news is that the renewal process is very easy, and in this article, we are going to guide you on how to do this.

How do I get started?

First, it’s important to note when you should apply for a Pennsylvania driver’s license. If you have lived in the state for more than 20 days, you must carry a Pennsylvania issued driver’s license as per state laws.

If your license is expired, you have multiple options for renewal, which include online renewals, in person, or by mail. For online renewals, you will be required to provide a valid PA driver’s license with a photo and in-state address, as well as a valid credit card for payment.

Once you have fulfilled all the requirements, you will then login to your account on the Online Driver Services site using your driver’s license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. Keep in mind that in order to qualify for online renewal, your license must be valid, or it has to have expired less than six months prior to your renewal date. You also need to make sure all your information is up-to-date and that your photograph is current.

What if I have a commercial driver’s license?

Commercial driver’s licenses are not eligible to be renewed online, so in this case you must renew your license at a PA DMV location. In order to make the renewal process seamless, be sure to have either an invitation to renew or the commercial driver’s license application. You will also need a check or money order payable to “PennDOT”.

There are exceptions for military personnel, which include eligibility for a Military Status Endorsement card. This allows PennDOT to retrieve their driving records when they are located out of state.

What are the fees associated with driver’s license renewal?

The fees to renew a PA driver’s license vary depending on the age of the driver. If you are under 65 years old, the fee is $30.50 and your license will be valid for 4 years; if you are over 65 years old, the fee is $25.00 and your license will be valid for 2 years.

An additional processing fee might apply to motorcycle endorsements and OLMs.

How do I know when to renew my license?

PennDOT offers drivers a three-month reminder and a six-month grace period post expiration. Pennsylvania drivers can be confident that their license renewal will be an easy, hassle-free process.
